2D, 3D or 4D armrests, which one should I choose?

An office / gaming chair nowadays has the most luxurious functions, RGB lights, extra comfort padding, adjustable backrest and much more. But an office / gaming chair also has adjustable 2D, 3D or 4D armrests. It's probably something you've never heard of before. What is it and what can I do with it? And more importantly what's the difference? You can read all of that in this blog!

Ergonomic office- / gaming chair

What is the definition of an ergonomic chair? It means that the chair is adjustable and gives you a good posture to be able to work or play. An ergonomic working position is important if you spend long hours sitting in a chair. Bad posture can lead to injuries you'd rather not have. So it is crucial to adopt an ergonomic posture if you sit on a chair for a long time, and an ergonomic gaming chair will help you with that. These can often be adjusted completely to your liking.

The armrests are also important to be able to adopt an ergonomic position. That is why there are 1D, 2D, 3D and 4D armrests to support your arms as best as possible. We will now explain the differences to you!

Fixed armrests

There are gaming chairs with fixed armrests. This means that the armrest is completely fixed and cannot be moved in any direction.

1D armrests

The most common direction in which you can move an armrest is vertical, ie adjustable in height. This is important, so that you can adjust the armrests of your office / gaming chair to the height of your desk. These are called 1D armrests.

2D armrests

If an armrest can also be moved horizontally, we call this 2D armrests. You can then slide the armrest to the side.

3D armrests

The more luxurious gaming chairs often have a 3D or 4D armrest. In this case you can move the armrest in an extra dimension. This can be forward or backward, or tilting inward. When a gaming chair has one of these two functions, it is 3D.

4D armrests

As expected, the 4D armrest can be moved in 4 dimensions. This means that the armrest is adjustable in height, sideways, front and back and in and out.

What suits you best?

Now that you know the differences, you're probably wondering what's best option for me? If you do not need adjustable armrests, then fixed armrests are recommended. If you want your armrests to fit under your desk, we advise you to have at least 1D armrests. If you are wider or slimmer built, it may be wise to choose 2D arm supports. If you want to determine the distance to your desk, a 3D armrest is best because it can be moved forwards and backwards. If you want support while typing or moving your mouse, it is best to choose 4D armrests. Be aware that the more function the armrest has, the more expensive the chair becomes.
