iPad mini 4 vs iPad mini 5: Similarities and differences

After the release of the iPad Mini 4 in October 2015, it took almost 4 years until a new iPad mini was launched: the iPad Mini 5 (2019). The handy and popular iPad mini needed a little refresh and is now up to date again. In general, the Mini 4 and Mini 5 are similar, but there are also some differences between the two models. We've listed them in this blog post.

iPad Mini 4 vs iPad Mini 5: The similarities

The design

The design of the iPad is, of course, the first thing to stand out. The design of the iPad mini 5 is in line with the sleek design of its predecessor - that's how we've come to expect it from Apple. The design of the mini 4 and the mini 5 are similar, although there are slight differences in lines, sizes and colors.

Colors

  • Both models are available in silver, space gray and gold. However, there is a difference in the gold color; it is rose gold on the iPad mini 5.
  • Dimensions
  • The dimensions remain the same: 203.2 x 134.8 x 6.1 mm. The iPad mini is only 20 cm long - this is the ideal solution if you have limited space and are looking for a device that fits comfortably in your hand.
  • Weight
  • Both devices weigh 300g and are easy to handle.

Please note that the dimensions of both iPads are the same, but unfortunately the cases for the iPad mini 4 are not compatible with the iPad mini 5. This is because the camera and buttons are just in a different place. This is not a problem if you use a smart cover but if you want better protection, we recommend using a cover specifically designed for the new model.

The screen

Both iPads have a 9.7-inch screen and a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. Also, the screens of the mini 4 and mini 5 both feature a Retina display. As a reminder, the Retina option is based on the fact that a human eye cannot distinguish the pixels.

The camera

Both devices share the same 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording up to 30 fps. So with this camera you can take good quality photos - even if it is on a completely different level than the latest iPhones. However, this criterion is not too important for most iPad mini users.

Connections

Both iPad versions feature a Lightning port but unfortunately no USB-C port as currently found on the latest iPad Pro (2018).  This is because Apple considers this connection a pro feature. The mini, on the other hand, does feature a Mini-jack connector. Additionally, both versions can be unlocked via Touch ID - simple and effective.

Battery

The iPad mini 4 lasts about 10 hours, depending on how many apps you use. The same goes for the iPad mini 5. This time is measured for using applications that use a lot of power (WiFi, videos and music).

iPad mini 4 vs iPad mini 5 : The differences

iOS 12

Chip

The biggest difference of the new iPad Mini 2019 cannot be recognized from the outside but is hidden on the inside. The iPad mini 5 has an Apple A12 Bionic chip (similar to that found in iPhones XS / XS Max and XR) while the iPad mini 4 has an A8 chip.

In terms of storage capacity, the iPad mini 4 was initially available with 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB storage. The iPad mini 5 will be launched in two models with a 64 GB option and a 256 GB option. As usual from Apple, there is unfortunately no option to insert a microSD in both models.

FaceTime Camera
The difference is remarkable: while the iPad Mini 4 has a camera with 1.2 MP / 720 videos, the new iPad mini 5 is equipped with a FaceTime HD camera of 7 megapixels on the front with an aperture f / 2.2. This camera allows you to record 1080p videos. You can also take advantage of the Retina Flash and wide color registration for photos and Live Photos. An advantage for anyone who wants to use the iPad mini a lot for FaceTime!

True Tone
The iPad Mini 5 is equipped with the True Tone option. This means that the new iPad mini 2019 has sensors that measure and correct color and brightness and adjust the brightness according to the ambient lighting. This feature is designed to provide a better and more comfortable image for our eyes. This feature, also present on the latest iPhones and MacBooks, can be turned on or off as desired.

Apple Pencil
The iPad Mini 5 is compatible with the first generation of the Apple Pencil.
