Is my iPhone X / XS waterproof?

Apple is offering new water-resistant iPhones. But are they waterproof or not?

Nowadays we use our smartphones all the time and everywhere, but an accident can happen so quickly! A glass of water or a coffee spill and it's a panic! This is why users are increasingly looking for a waterproof smartphone! And Apple has understood this and offered new iPhones that are more and more resistant to water drops and humidity, but does this mean that your iPhone is 100% waterproof?

Which iPhones are waterproof?

The iPhone 7 is intended to be "water resistant". The iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR, iPhone 11 series and iPhone 12 series should also meet this resistance standard.

How long can my iPhone be submerged under water? And to how many meters?

To understand in more detail how resistant your iPhone is to being immersed in water, you need to look at its protection rating (IP standards).

What do the IP67 and IP68 standards mean?

iPhones are officially certified to IP standards. This standard means two things:

- The first number indicates the dust density of the device. 6 is the highest value here, so the device is 100% dustproof. The frame has been designed so that no dust can penetrate.

- The second number in the IP standard indicates the degree of protection of the device against moisture:

  • The 7 stands for splash protection. This means that your iPhone X can survive up to 1m of deep water for up to 30 minutes.
  • An 8 for the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR means that they are waterproof for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 2m. So it's possible to shower with the iPhone X / XS but taking underwater photos is rather risky

Is my iPhone 100% waterproof?

No, the iPhones X / XS and XS Max are only partially waterproof! You can't swim for hours with your iPhone X. However, the device can easily withstand heavy rainfall or a short immersion in water. Please note that damage caused by moisture is NOT covered by the Apple warranty. This applies to the iPhones X, XS and XS Max.

Despite their IP68 certification, the iPhone XS and XS Max are not fully waterproof either. Their resistance to dust and water may even decrease even over time due to normal wear and tear on your device

Is showering with the iPhone X / XS possible?
