Is My Apple Watch Band Real or Fake?
How to recognise an original Apple Watch strap
At SB Supply you exclusively buy original Apple Watch straps, directly from Apple and covered by a manufacturer's warranty. On this page we explain per strap type which official features Apple uses. This way you know exactly what distinguishes a genuine strap and what you can expect from an original.

What makes an original Apple Watch strap original?
- Material varies per strap type: Sport Band=fluoroelastomer, Sport Loop=woven nylon/polyester, Solo Loop=liquid silicone rubber, Braided Solo Loop=polyester filaments with silicone threads, Milanese Loop and Link Bracelet=stainless steel
- Case size engraved or stamped on the lug or inner side. Groups are 38/40/41 mm, 42/44/45 mm, 46 mm and 49 mm depending on the model
- On rubber and nylon straps the band size (S/M or M/L) is printed on the inside. Braided Solo Loop and Solo Loop use numbered sizes (0 through 12)
- On the Sport Band the connectors are plastic and match the strap colour. Different features apply to metal straps and the Braided Solo Loop
- Seamless, clean finish with no visible glue or sloppy stitching
- New in Apple packaging or as a verified open-box unit, depending on the product status at SB Supply
- 1-year Apple Limited Warranty. As a consumer you also have statutory conformity rights through the seller
- Many later original straps have a small marking or serial number in a connector. The absence of one is not conclusive proof of counterfeit
Practical checkpoints per strap type
The most popular Apple Watch strap, available in dozens of colours. Apple uses high-quality fluoroelastomer for Sport Bands, a material that is softer and more durable than ordinary silicone rubber.
- The colour of the connectors (3 click-in parts on the lugs) matches the colour of the strap. This is the quickest check
- Inside near the pin: watch case size (38/40/41 mm or 42/44/45 mm) inside a circle
- Inside near the holes: "S/M" or "M/L" inside a circle
- Made from fluoroelastomer, feels different from ordinary silicone
- No Apple logo visible on the strap itself
- Newer straps have a serial number engraved in one of the connectors
- Connectors are black instead of matching the strap colour
- Middle connector is metal instead of plastic
- Made from silicone, feels different and attracts lint
- No size markings for case size or band size (S/M or M/L)
Note: does your strap have no serial number but all other genuine features? Then it is likely still original. The oldest straps (2015 through early 2016) do not yet have a serial number.
The Nike Sport Band is an Apple/Nike co-branded strap with its own colour options and branding. It is sold separately and works with compatible Apple Watch models, not exclusively with the Apple Watch Nike edition.
- Connectors are almost always black (colour check does not apply here)
- Inside near the pin: Apple Watch+Nike Swoosh branding (older straps have a "+" after the Swoosh)
- Side of the lug near the pin: case size (38/40/41 mm or 42/44/45 mm), without a circle
- Inside near the holes: "S/M" or "M/L" inside a circle
- Made from fluoroelastomer
- No Apple Watch+Nike Swoosh branding
- Middle connector is metal instead of plastic
- Made from silicone
- Colour combination that Apple/Nike has never released (check the current Apple product page)
The Sport Loop is made from double-layered woven nylon and fastens with hook-and-loop. The strap adjusts to fit thanks to the flexible loop, features Apple has precisely specified.
- Connectors are almost always black
- Hook-and-loop patches are evenly distributed and run almost fully across the width
- The loop fits snugly. The strap has little room to move back and forth
- Inside at the opposite end from the hook-and-loop: case size inside a circle
- No Apple logo on the strap
- Middle connector is metal instead of plastic
- Hook-and-loop patches are uneven, not centred or smaller than normal
- The loop is too large and the strap can easily slide back and forth
- No case size marking (note: some fakes now include this too)
The Nike Sport Loop is an Apple/Nike co-branded strap with reflective yarn and its own colour options. It is sold separately and works with compatible Apple Watch models.
- Many Nike Sport Loops have reflective yarn, visible in sunlight or with a torch. Check per specific colour/generation whether this applies
- Apple Watch+Nike Swoosh branding just below the hook-and-loop patches
- Hook-and-loop patches are evenly distributed across the width
- Inside: case size inside a circle near the lug, on the opposite side from the hook-and-loop
- No reflective yarn when the colour/generation normally has it
- No Apple Watch+Nike Swoosh branding
- Uneven or off-centre hook-and-loop
- The loop is too loose and the strap slides back and forth
The Braided Solo Loop consists of thousands of recycled polyester filaments around ultra-thin silicone threads. The numbered sizing (size 0 through 12, depending on generation) is unique in the Apple Watch range.
- Lugs are metal and sit over the weave
- The weave widens towards the lugs, fitting organically against the watch
- Size (40/41 mm or 44/45/46 mm) and numeric band size (0 through 12, depending on generation) are laser-etched on the metal lug
- The braided strap is slightly narrower than the width of the Apple Watch (normal)
- From Series 7 onwards: denser weave with a metallic look and higher tensile strength
- Lugs are plastic
- The woven part has a consistent width and does not widen at the lugs
- No laser etching on the lugs
- Weave pattern differs from original Apple straps
- The strap looks like fabric but is made from silicone
- Only available in S/M/L instead of Apple's numbered sizing
The Milanese Loop is made from finely woven stainless steel and fastens with a magnet. A timeless, premium strap available since the very first Apple Watch.
- Case size (38/40/41 mm or 42/44/45 mm) engraved on the underside of the lug without the loop clasp
- "Stainless Steel" engraved on the underside of the loop clasp
- Magnetic closure has a small notch for your fingernail to release the strap
- Models before 2018: the magnetic closure cannot be pulled through the loop clasp. From the 2018 redesign onwards it can. Both are original, depending on the year of manufacture
- No engraving or stamp present
- Coating wears off quickly on black or gold versions
- Available in unusual colours such as bright blue, red or metallic rainbow
- Magnetic closure has a half-sphere or rounded shape instead of Apple's flat closure
The Link Bracelet is a fully metal strap made from 316L stainless steel. It is adjustable without tools via built-in buttons, a technical detail Apple has carefully engineered.
- Links are removed via buttons on the inside of the strap, no tools required
- "316L Stainless Steel" engraved on the inside of the clasp
- 38 mm or 42 mm engraved inside a circle on the inside of the clasp
- Officially available in colours such as Natural, Slate and Gold. Always check the current Apple product page for the full colour range
- Links must be removed with a tool
- No markings on the strap
- Available in a colour Apple has never officially released for that specific model. Check the Apple product page
Note: some third-party straps also use a button system for link adjustment. Always check the other markings before making a judgement.
The Hermès leather strap is the result of an exclusive collaboration between Apple and the French fashion house Hermès. Each strap is handmade from selected leather in Hermès' ateliers in France.
- At SB Supply, Hermès straps are always 100% original, both new and open box
- Underside of the strap with buckle: a series of letters and numbers stamped in that identify the manufacturer, year and craftsman
- Underside of the buckle itself: "STAINLESS STEEL" engraved
- Visible stitching on the underside of the loop buckle
- Leather is very supple and drapes naturally around the wrist
- Stitching close to the edge of the strap, made by hand (small irregularities are normal)
- One or more of the above markings is missing
- Leather feels stiff or thick
- Stitching looks too perfect/machine-made or is too far from the edge
Leather year code (based on collector guides, not officially published by Apple): 2015=T, 2016=X, 2017=A, 2018=C, 2019=D, 2020=Y, 2021=Z, 2022=U, 2023=B, 2024=W. Note: not every Hermès strap is leather. Apple/Hermès also releases models in rubber and woven polyamide, such as the Kilim and Twill Jump.
Introduced in spring 2021. The Hermès Jumping Single Tour combines woven nylon with Hermès' distinctive H pattern and a steel buckle.
- Underside of the buckle: "STAINLESS STEEL" engraved
- Visible stitching on the underside of the loop buckle
- Nylon weave feels smooth when you run your finger over it
- Nylon is fairly stiff (especially when new) when bent
- One or more of the above markings is missing
- Nylon feels rough to the touch
- The H pattern in the weave looks untidy
- Colour combination that Hermès has never released

Why an original Apple Watch strap?
An original strap is more than an accessory. It is an extension of your Apple Watch. Here are the most important reasons to always choose original.
Apple uses fluoroelastomer for Sport Bands, a material that is softer and more skin-friendly than ordinary silicone. It feels more comfortable on the skin, does not attract lint and holds its colour. Each material is specifically chosen for the strap type and use case.
Original Apple straps meet strict European safety standards and have been tested for allergens and skin irritations. Do you have sensitive skin or wear your watch day and night? Then an original strap is the only safe choice.
Original Apple Watch straps barely discolour and last for years. They are covered by Apple's One-Year Limited Warranty, and as a consumer in Europe you also have statutory conformity rights through the seller. At SB Supply our own customer service team is also on hand if something is not right.
Original straps are precisely tailored to the dimensions of the Apple Watch case. The lugs click in smoothly, the clasp aligns seamlessly and the strap moves with your wrist, just as Apple designed it.

Fit and skin contact
An original Apple Watch strap is not only recognisable by its features, but also by how it sits. Cheap counterfeit straps use inferior materials that irritate faster, deform or lose skin contact. For the heart rate sensor and Taptic Engine to work properly, the back of your Apple Watch must make full contact with your skin.
- Original fluoroelastomer (Sport Band) lies softer and flatter against the skin than counterfeit silicone
- Wear the Watch on the top of your wrist, not on the wrist bone
- Snug but comfortable: the back always makes full skin contact
- Too tight: skin irritation, especially with counterfeit straps made from untested material
- Too loose: heart rate sensor, ECG and Taptic Engine work unreliably
- Cheap straps deform after a few weeks, causing the fit to deteriorate
- Unsure between two sizes? Choose the larger size for everyday use
- After exercise: always loosen the strap by one hole to prevent skin irritation

Snug but comfortable. The back makes full skin contact for reliable sensor readings. Original straps maintain this fit for years.

Too loose or worn on the wrist bone. Counterfeit straps deform faster and lose skin contact sooner, resulting in unreliable readings.
